Music: FROG Score May Be Eligible for Oscar Nomination for Original Score
The Princess and the Frog
The competition for the Academy Awards' Original Score category is heating up with 84 film scores eligible for inclusion - yet one film's inclusion as potential nominee may have barely squeaked in despite the Academy's staunch rules on eligibility.

Variety is reporting that Disney's 'The Princess and the Frog' has been placed on the "reminder list" which is mailed out to the 234 members of the Academy's music branch. This, despite the "diminished impact clause" which prohibits the inclusion of "scores diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs" from entering into competition for original song score. Under the specifics of this clause, Andrea Guerra's score for 'Nine', as well as the score for the film 'Where the Wild Things Are' were formally disqualified. 'The Princess and the Frog' features seven original songs by Randy Newman, as well as a piece by Ne-Yo for the film's end credits.

From Variety, "The rule was instituted in the mid-1990s, after wins by four Disney animated musicals in The category designed to reward "dramatic underscoring," not multiple songs. So a possible win for "original score" by a Disney animated musical this year would be ironic considering the origins of the rule."

However, 'Princess and the Frog' may not be completely exempt. Variety also reports that it's believed that a last-minute disqualification of the film score may eventually happen.

In The Press: Success of a Princess
The Princess and the Frog
When Disney set out to make history by creating the first black animated princess in "The Princess and the Frog," there were plenty of early critics and naysayers who questioned whether the studio would get it right. Now that the film is out -- reaching No. 1 in its opening weekend -- the naysayers have been all but silent.

"The reason for the critical silence is the film doesn't fall into the trap that people expected," Mia Mask, the film department chair at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., told ABCNews.com. "Because the film was in production so long, people were expecting (Disney) to mess it up and reproduce stereotypes in some way. But the folks working on this really had a clue and managed to avoid the pitfalls that people expected they might fall into." "(Disney) did a good job in not being controversial," Michael Baran, a Harvard University cultural anthropologist, told ABCNews.com. "With this one, they had to be a lot more careful."

"It certainly was important to make sure we were creating the next Disney princess who could stand with all the other Disney princesses," Peter del Vecho, the film's producer, told ABCNews.com.

After deciding to set the movie in New Orleans and make the main characters black, the filmmakers solicited feedback from prominent African Americans along the way. "We wanted to make sure we got it right," said del Vecho, adding that the film was never delayed and the release date was even moved up by a month.

But while the film was in production, rumors and criticism threatened to tarnish Disney's first black princess even before she made it to the screen.

After "early speculation," del Vecho said the filmmakers were confident that "once people saw the movie they would be very pleased and embrace Tiana." Teresa Wiltz, senior culture writer for TheRoot.com, said she understands the reason for all the early speculation. "There are still so few images of black people in the media that we come armed to the multiplex with all these expectations," Wiltz told ABCNews.com. "It's a very high, high bar."

Wiltz said she thinks Disney met the challenge. "I thought it was lovely," she said, "beautifully done." Baran agreed. "Any issues one can find with representations are not really blatant," he said. "They were careful to portray African Americans. More than anything else they make the white folk look ridiculous."

Time magazine voted the film one of the best of the year.

The Princess and the Frog
Discover a dream come true with the brand new ''The Princess and the Frog'' Limited Edition Framed Print by Thomas Kinkade. Says the artist, ''In my painting I wanted to suggest the look of traditional animation yet maintain the sense of painterly mood that my work is known for. I lavished detail into the bayou flowers glowing with hidden fireflies, as well as the curving live oak draped with lacey Spanish moss. The characters of the movie swirl about the composition, inviting us to ponder the part each plays in the story.''

Movies: Princess and The Frog hit the first position at the US box office!
The Princess and the Frog
Disney’s animated ‘The Princess and the Frog’ hopped over feel-good football film ‘The Blind Side’, to take the top spot in North American box office sales in its first weekend in wide release. The family-friendly movie tells the tale of a woman turned into a frog after a kiss and marks a return for the studio to hand-drawn animation. “It’s one of those classic Disney fairy tales and people just fell in love with it,” said Chuck Viane head of domestic distribution at Walt Disney Co’s Buena Vista unit. The No 3 movie was ‘Invictus’.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol’ slipped to the No 5 spot. Vampire romance ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ dropped two slots to No 4. Another potential Oscar contender is ‘The Lovely Bones’ based on the best-selling novel. ‘Brothers’, a drama about soldiers returning home from war, took sixth place.
